Q+A with Elizabeth Woll of WOLL

· · Comments

Welcome, Elizabeth Woll of WOLL!

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your craft.

WOLL is a line of acrylic jewelry that is all made in my San Francisco studio. I combine traditional metal-smithing techniques with new technology to create whimsical yet well-designed pieces.

Where do you draw energy and inspiration for your work? (People, feelings, thoughts, weather, nature, travel, a specific city, etc.)

I draw design inspiration from my collection of vintage costume jewelry, mid-century home décor and from the deserts and beaches of California.

What’s one of your favorite moments of the creative process? (The first stroke on a blank canvas, stamping your envelope shut, signing prints, etc.)

I love the moment when I realize that an already successful piece can be refined even more. My designs are always evolving and I enjoy re-designing pieces.

As small business owners, I think it’s safe to say we learn as we go! What’s something you’ve learned from operating your business that you wish you could have told yourself when you started?

I have learned so many things but one that I would like to go back and tell myself is that not everyone is going to like everything that you make and if something doesn't elicit an immediate positive response, it can often be how it is being presented and not related to the value of the work. Presentation and context are everything!

What roadblocks have you hit and overcome as a small business owner?

Learning to let the NO's roll off of my back took a lot of practice but once I mastered that, it became much easier to ask for what I want without investing so much in the response.

What do you have planned for your business in the months to come? Any new projects, collabs, collections you can hint at?

I am trying to travel a lot for my business this year and to make work fun again so I am doing a show in Miami with my friend Vanessa from Shop-Realm and shows in Las Vegas and Boston as well.

Tell us about a small victory! The little things are so worthy of celebration! (Anything that made you do your happy dance:)

I sent a cold email to one of my dream retailers and not only got a response but also a wholesale order! I actually did jump up and down when I saw the email.
