Behind The Scenes with Rino Minami of Tokyn Candles & Co.

I've always been fascinated with how certain scents evoke detailed memories, transporting you back to a specific place and time. It becomes an even more intimate moment when these fleeting olfactory memories come flooding in while a warm glow and flicker of the candle illuminates your room... Hi! My name is Rino and I am the candle-lista and creator of Tokyn Candles & Co. I launched Tokyn Candles in late 2015 in Brooklyn, NY to set out to create natural aromatic soy candles that would allow me to share the experiences I've had in various regions in Japan and the US through a collection of original scents. I handle the whole process from start to finish from blending of essential...

Behind the Scenes with Fiber Artist Jose Heroys

Hi! I’m Jose and I’m based in south-east England, where I make life-like bird sculptures out of wool and other natural fibres. I make each bird by hand using a mixture of crochet, needle-felt and embroidery. I have a real passion for birds and spend a lot of time watching them in my garden and when I’m walking out in the beautiful countryside that surrounds us. I’m lucky enough to work from home - my studio room is quite small, but the light is lovely and it’s bright and peaceful. It overlooks the garden where I have a great view of our bird feeders, that bring in a wonderful array of birds - and inspiration! If I’m starting a new...

Q+A with Georgia Colon of Herban Roots

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your craft. I'm a stay at home mama to 4 wild and free little ones, from ages 7 mos to 6 yrs. We live on a little piece of family farmland in Eastern NC, where we spend our days "unschooling" and dreaming of running a sustainable community garden/farm one day! I inherited the entrepreneurial spirit from my dad, but never intended to start a business with Herban Roots. It was born rather organically from a passion to provide my family with healthy, safe alternatives to chemical skincare products, without having to sacrifice on quality or luxury. I came into the market at a prime time where there is both a growing realization...

Hawk + Owl Weaving: The Process

Hello! I’m Jen Whitcomb, the fiber artist and maker behind Hawk + Owl Weaving Co. I weave in my sunny home studio in the Blue Ridge Mountains of SW Virginia. I’m so happy to talk to you today about my creative process and general love for one of my favorite crafts in the world: weaving! My weaving process is inspired by the many things happening around me: the colorful flowers and trees in my yard, my children’s artwork, picture books that I read to them, modern art, and my imagination. Each weaving is different and takes shape organically. Often I will sit down at my loom and have a certain pattern or design in mind, and then halfway through, I’ll...

Q+A with Laura the Maker

Tell us about what you do. I’m Laura, an artist, maker, and puppy cuddler (yes, it’s my official title ;) I work with lots of different materials, but wood holds a special place in my heart (along with my golden retriever Penny). I love creating beautiful wooden objects for the home, both functional and decorative.   What’s your favorite thing about your creative process?  My work is very heavily generated by catharsis. I start my pieces with a vague idea of what they will be, but let the material, tools, and my hands ultimately decide what comes out of the process—it’s always a little different, and allows each piece to have its own nuances. How do you prepare your business...
