Q+A with Laura the Maker

Tell us about what you do. I’m Laura, an artist, maker, and puppy cuddler (yes, it’s my official title ;) I work with lots of different materials, but wood holds a special place in my heart (along with my golden retriever Penny). I love creating beautiful wooden objects for the home, both functional and decorative.   What’s your favorite thing about your creative process?  My work is very heavily generated by catharsis. I start my pieces with a vague idea of what they will be, but let the material, tools, and my hands ultimately decide what comes out of the process—it’s always a little different, and allows each piece to have its own nuances. How do you prepare your business...

Yuliya Chorna Jewellery: The Process

Every piece that I create for Yuliya C Jewellery is handmade by me in my shared Toronto studio on Queen West. Usually the creating process starts with an inspiration or a thought that reminds me of something specific. I draw most of my daily inspiration from nature, art, fashion and travelling. Hello! I’m Dana, the creator and owner of Apple White Handmade. I love to make useful and pretty items for the home, women and kids. I do all the designing, prepping, sewing, photography and packaging for my shop. My shop consists of mostly cut and sewn items, but I love to paint and knit and especially like trying out new crafts. I’ve found I feel the happiest when I’m creative in some way every day. I live in Scottsdale, AZ with my husband and our 3 kids. In my business, the creative process always starts with inspiration for a new product. My inspiration most often starts out with something myself or family needs or wants. I purchased some beautiful authentic...

Little Black Sheep Studio: The Process

Have you ever wondered about the intricate process of handwoven scarves? Kate Koconis of Little Black Sheep Studio is here to walk us through her weaving process.  There is a lot more that goes into making a handwoven scarf than just the actual weaving part. I use primarily just the natural colors of fibers, and don’t do any dyeing. So all the colors you see are naturally occurring in the wool. A lot of weaving is being technically capable of threading and weaving on a loom and understanding the ins and outs of how a loom actually works. The fun creative parts come when I get to pick out colors, and come up with a pattern. The patterns are a huge part of why...
